First day box-office collection of ‘Highway’
Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Highway’ opened with an average start. The film had occupancy of 20-25% across the country. The response at multiplexes is better than single theatres. However, the occupancy showed an increase in the evening shows. The film is expected to make around 11 crore in the opening day.
‘Highway’ directed by Imtiaz Ali received a mixed response from critics, however, Alia and Randeep’s performances was applauded. Audience liked Alia Bhatt’s huge transition from stylish Radha of ‘Student of the year’ to simple traumatized girl in ‘Highway’.
However, the same day release ‘Darr@ The Mall’ had a dull start. The film had occupancy of around 5% only.
The numbers of ‘Highway’ is expected to increase by the weekend but the film’s collection might slow down this week as Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan starrer, ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ will release next week.
'Highway' is the story of a girl. A city girl - young, full of life - is on the highway at night. With her fiance. They are scheduled to get married in four days. Suddenly, her life is swung away from the brocade and jewellery of marriage to the harsh brutality of abduction. She is taken away by this group of rustic criminals. Her life will never be the same again.
The same night, the gang is in panic. The girl is a big industrialist's daughter. His links in the corridors of power make ransom out of the question. They are doomed. But the leader of this group is adamant. For him sending her back is not an option. He will do whatever it takes to see this through.
Days pass. These are days of unbelievable horror for her. But, as the Tempo runs and miles turn, as the scenery changes, the light changes, the sun sets and rises and the air changes, she feels that she has changed as well.

Highway Movie review: Alia Bhatt, Randeep Hooda's Highway is bumpy yet enjoyable
Imtiaz Ali's Highway will not give you an adrenaline rush, but a serene feeling that stays with you long after the film is over. Alia Bhatt, who's still the student of Bollywood, has the makings of a superstar.
Warning: passengers… oops viewers of this movie (Highway) are requested to take a deep breath and relax in their seats. The road ahead is bumpy, slow, yet deeply enjoyable.
Kicking off the journey: The opening credits of Imtiaz Ali's Highway prepare you for the journey ahead. The camera moves with you along the breathtaking landscapes of Sambhar, Ajmer, Bikaner, Faridkot, Rampur, Kaza, Pahlgam and Aru.
Imtiaz Ali's Highway has all the highs and lows of a journey. Here're the moments that made us stop and think…
The first stop (scene): There is chaos all around as the preparation for a wedding is in full steam. Alia Bhatt is set to get married. The pre-wedding ceremonies are shot in a documentary style. There are no full dialogues, only snippets that you generally see in a real life wedding video. It was refreshing to see the wedding ceremonies sans the Bollywood touch.
A sharp turn in the story: Veera (Alia Bhatt), the daughter of a rich industrialist, is set to tie the knot with Vinay, when her life takes an unexpected turn, after she is kidnapped by a gang of dacoits (One of them is Randeep Hooda). Much to her surprise, only after she comes out of her present circumstances that she begins to enjoy the journey called life.
Roadblock: Can you empathise with your kidnapper? Are you normal if you find him cute and sing a lullaby (Sooha Saaha) to him? Will you stay with your adductor even if given a chance to escape? If your answers to the above-mentioned questions are No, you are perfectly normal. Clearly suffering from the Stockholm syndrome, our protagonist says yes to all of the above questions, to discover her inner freedom, at the cost of her outer freedom.
Performances - a dhaba break: Two-film old Alia Bhatt is still a 'student' in Bollywood, but can give a lesson or two to many. A natural performer, she nails it in a couple of scenes. In one scene, she gets a chance to escape from the clutches of her kidnappers, but returns to them after she finds she has nowhere to go. In another, she bursts into peals of laughter, followed by a bout of sobbing.
Randeep Hooda delivers a nuanced yet controlled performance. He perfects the Haryanvi accent to lend authenticity to his character. He's able to get into the skin of his character Mahabir Bhati. His character opens up and frees himself from the self-imposed shackles towards the end.
In the right direction: Imtiaz Ali's film is all soul. The movie takes one direction and focuses on it, rather than moving to sub-plots. True, there's no adrenaline rush, but there's a serene feel to it. Much like his previous films, Imtiaz's female protagonist wants to break out of the existing rules and regulations, to lead life at her own terms (remember Jab We Met's Geet and Rockstar's Heer). Hats off to Imtiaz for doing justice to the essence of the film.
The musical journey: The Oscar winning team of Jai Ho - AR Rahman, Resul Pookutty, Amrit Pritam churn out some soulful music to go along with Imtiaz Ali's road movie.

Highway Movie Preview:Box Office Fate...Will It Be Great?
It's been more than a year since actress Alia Bhatt was last seen on the big screen. She now returns to cinema with her latest flick Highway. We take a look at Alia's popularity chart and what to expect from her next film...
1. Open affair
Will Alia Bhatt's charm work for Highway?
One film old Alia Bhatt is slowly becoming comfortable with her new-found stardom. Thanks to numerous controversies and well-executed publicity stunts. She is also coming out in the open about her relationship with actor Arjun Kapoor. They were recently seen arriving and leaving for a party together. She made no qualms about being seen together. Perhaps, it was just promotion for their movies.
2. Career graph
Will Alia Bhatt's charm work for Highway?
Even though she is just one film old, she is relatively famous than many actors. Post her debut in Student Of The Year, Alia was seen walking ramps and posing for magazine covers. She even performed at various award shows. But 2014 is crucial for Alia as two of her films (Highway and 2 States) will release. She is also doing another film with Dharma Productions soon. It is called Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Varun Dhawan is her co-star yet again but this time he will marry her. The film was offered to her by Karan Johar whom she blindly follows and trusts.
3. Highway
Will Alia Bhatt's charm work for Highway?
Bhatt is now all set to appear in Imtiaz Ali's Highway opposite Randeep Hooda. With this film she marks her debut as a singer. She plays a young city girl who is full of life. Alia says she didn't attend any workshops because Imtiaz wanted her to be raw. The film also stars Randeep Hooda who plays a truck driver. But to be honest to the core, Randeep is totally sidelined by Alia. Speaking of which, she has sung a lullaby in Highway. Imtiaz Ali and AR Rahman suggested she sing the song as Imtiaz Ali had heard her singing Jiya Re (from Jab Tak Hai Jaan) while they were shooting. Alia quickly jumped at the opportunity. Smart move.
4. Critical acclaim
Will Alia Bhatt's charm work for Highway?
Highway, which was screened in the Panorama section of the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival, received a lukewarm response and bad reviews. Critical acclaim is something Alia lacks. Still we aren't sure about how much that is about to change with Highway. Guess we will have to wait.
5. Controversies
Will Alia Bhatt's charm work for Highway?
From performing at the controversial Saifai festival to Koffee With Karan, Alia has mostly attracted negative publicity. She recently made nasty comments about Parineeti Chopra on Koffee With Karan. It's obvious that she is a motormouth. But being controversial and fearless has only helped Alia to overstep the mark. As they say, “There is no such thing as bad publicity.” But what remains to be answered is if all her charm will work for Highway?
